Description:

Guru Greg starts with the controversial choice of Greg Chappell to coach India in 2005, and follows his journey to help India win their Holy Grail - victory in the 2007 One Day Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. It all started so well. The fly-on-the-wall ABC documentary begins in 2005 with Chappells controversial appointment. He had already turned down Pakistan and the West Indies, so why accept India? Partly because he was too old to be offered the Australian job, he admits. But mainly because India "is the greatest challenge in world cricket. Its the epicentre of world cricket and probably will be for the foreseeable future." With 1.12 billion people, 55 million of whom play cricket, there was no shortage of talent. But the national team was past its best, with ageing superstars such as Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. Chappell's plan was to introduce younger players, improve the team\'s fitness, set up an academy, forge a team rather than a collection of prima donnas and win this year\'s World Cup. He was backed by the BCCI board. But soon after his appointment a new board came in. \"I suppose they were distracted by their needs, which were to get re-elected 12 months later," Chappell says drily. Chappell has no regrets. "India is an amazing country and this is a time when things are taking off. And there are a lot of sensible people in the country who recognise what we were trying to do." As for the documentary, which he hasn't seen, hes glad theres a record of the chaotic caravan. "Its hard to explain even to friends and family what it was like. It was like travelling with the Beatles."
